GEOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY
OF THE
BLACK AND GRAND PRAIRIES,
TEXAS
WITH DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF THE
CRETACEOUS FORMATIONS AND
SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ARTESIAN WATERS
BY
ROBERT T. HILL
A classic 1901 publication
describing the geology of central and north Texas by the
legendary geologist Robert T. Hill.
Includes an interesting survey of
water wells drilled into the underlying aquifers of the
area.
Fascinating that some of these
wells, drilled into the Trinity, for instance, were free flowing
at the rate of 100 gpm, while today, this same formation yields
wells of maybe 20 gpm, only rising to within 300 feet of the
surface.

In the summer of 1924, a group of students and
their instructor from the Department of Geology of the University
of Texas chose Cooke County as their area of study and field
work. The result is this detailed mapping of the geology of
Cooke county, including early oil development.
